Walk back to the meat case at a Giant, and you’ll see a small sign that says, "All Giant ground beef is a product of Canada, US and Mexico."
Well, that really narrows it down.
Your burgers could be from Saskatchewan, Nebraska or Oaxaca – but definitely not, say, Guangdong province in China.
Instead, buy a pound of ground beef or a steak out of Allen Colhoun’s coolers, and he’ll tell you exactly where it came from: a few miles down the road at his family’s farm in Harwood.
As a Maryland "buy local challenge" week kicks off today with a cookout at the Governor’s Mansion, more people are asking those kinds of questions.
"People are starting to pay more attention to where their food comes from," said Bill Morris, who runs Deep Cove Farm in Churchton and has been selling at farmers markets for 30 years.
Farmers markets are thriving, to the point that Ray Davis, owner of Good Luck Farm in Davidsonville, said Annapolis is "saturated" with them.
